High Speed Networking

RunTime personnel are experts in high speed networking including InfiniBand, RapidIO, and high-speed Ethernet (10Gb and 40Gb Ethernet). We understand network topologies, latency, bandwidth properties and have expertise in programming and characterize and optimize performance.

OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED™)

RunTime Computing has expertise in porting and tuning the OpenFabrics Alliance (OFA) OpenFabrics Enterprise Distribution (OFED™) software stack for InfiniBand and other Remote Direct Memory Access (RDMA) transports used in particular by Mellanox and Intel with InfiniBand and 40 Gigabit Ethernet. We work with companies who use OFED within their products to adapt it to fit their applications. We understand the internals of OFED and how to move it to new operating systems. For example, we have experience porting the OFED stack to operating systems such as VxWorks.


Sandia National Labs’ Portals is a low-level, high-performance alternative to OFED verbs. We have expertise in the Portals standard and programming with the Portals APIs, have developed high-performance network applications using Portals, and performed ports of Portals.

InfiniBand Performance

RunTime Computing has experience with performance characterization and enhancement of InfiniBand-based applications; we know how to determine where performance bottlenecks are and how to get more performance where optimizations may have been overlooked.

InfiniBand Verbs

When ultimate performance on InfiniBand fabrics is required and middleware such as MPI introduces too much overhead, InfiniBand Verbs can be utilized. We have experience and expertise with InfiniBand Verbs programming to develop low-level, low-latency, high-performance applications. We also have a solid understanding of kernel-bypass and application bypass principles for high speed networking.
